Numbers Bee is the first online mathematical tournament for students in grades 3 through 8. Several players connected to the Internet can compete with each other without having to be in the same location. All players are presented with a set of problems simultaneously from a central server. The time taken by a player to solve a specific problem is inversely proportional to his/her fluency in solving a problem set, and is used to judge individual winners.
Academic nationwide competitions from other disciplines have grown in prominence. The Spelling Bee draws nationwide media attention in the spring; the Geography Bee tests students’ knowledge of geography and current events. Until recently, there was no competition to challenge and stimulate the interest of students in mathematics, and Numbers Bee, the first online math tournament, fills this gap. With the growth in the availability of access to the Internet and the language of mathematics that transcends national boundaries, Numbers Bee has the potential to assist and challenge students globally.
